Alas, what is the worth of a great poet except that he immortalizes human circumstances in words that live and nurture mankind on their own. Cyprian Kewai Nyamgha (or simply, Kewai), author of Arrows For Soldiers (unpublished drama) and poet finally went home. In the minds of many who rose from his artistic nursery into the creative world, it has been, to say the least, traumatic. Kewai Nyamgha was laid to rest on Saturday May 7th. And just as I was still trying to come to terms with the fact, his colleague, Dr. Isaac K. Njila with whom he auditioned me for the role of Maimo, sent this terse message: “Sorry to inform you of the death of Buntu ie Mr. Nyamgha Cyprian Principal of GHS Sop. He was buried last Saturday.Sat, 9th.” This message riddled me like a spray of bullets. It came from one with whom we shared an artistic canvass. There was no more doubt: I would not see Bah Herman (ie ’the father of Herman’, as he was called locally) next time I visit his home. I called close family with no euphemisms; I had “received very bad news” I said, and mourned severely.
