Kiyoshi UMEYA is Professor of Social Anthropology at the Graduate School for Intercultural Studies, Kobe University, and Visiting Professor at the University of Cape Town (2019-2020).
He has carried out fieldwork among the Jopadhola in Eastern Uganda since 1997, and recently initiated research in Southern and Central Africa, particularly in Cameroon. He coedited Citizenship in Motion: South African and Japanese Scholars in Conversation (Bamenda: Langaa, 2019) and Bouncing Back: Critical Reflections on the Resilience Concept in Japan and South Africa (Bamenda: Langaa). His main work, The Gospel Sounds like the Witch’s Spell: Dealing with Misfortune among the Jopadhola of Eastern Uganda (Bamenda: Langaa, 2022) was awarded The Japan Consortium for Area Studies Award for Prominent Scholar in 2022.
